Bethlehem Police Chief Mark DiLuzio addressed city council at the July 2 meeting, voicing his opinion in favor of not allowing illegal immigrants to obtain identification cards. Easton's City Council recently approved a motion to allow illegal immigrants to be issued identification cards.

In an effort to stop a similar decision in Bethlehem, Chief DiLuzio read from a letter sent to police chiefs throughout the county by Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli.

"I've always recognized that illegal immigration is a complex issue," read DiLuzio. "I do not make the laws, but only enforce them. I believe providing benefits to illegal immigrants only encourages more illegal immigration."

Council offered no response after hearing DiLuzio.

Also at the July 2 meeting, DiLuzio was asked to discuss the safety of the attendees at the recent FIFA World Cup Soccerfest at SteelStacks. Thousands viewed the world cup on screens at the outdoor venue.

"A total of only four arrests were made," said DiLuzio. "These arrests were primarily for public drunkenness and one for under-age drinking…This is statistically good. That's what I like to see. People enjoying themselves safely."

As the meeting drew to a close, council unanimously approved the appointment of Michael Conway as the new director of recycling.

"I've heard a lot of good things about Mr. Conway," said council member Bryan Callahan. "I think he will do a great job."
