Coplay resident asks council to preserve borough's history
Al Recker spoke in front of the Coplay Borough Council at the Tuesday's workshop meeting about keeping Coplay's history alive.
"We don't preserve history as much as we could or should," Recker said.
He brought a list of different suggestions that could help residents remember Coplay's rich history for years to come.
One idea Recker suggested was putting plaques on the old buildings located throughout town.
Some buildings discussed were the first borough hall, first fire station and the American Legion building which used to be a post office and liquor store.
Recker also said the borough flag should be hung outside the municipal building, as well as by the parkway. As of now, there is one borough flag hanging in the council chambers.
Recker said the flag would "give the borough some character and let us know who we are as a community."
In order to get the younger generation involved, Recker recommended having a student government day. Kids could shadow town officials or attend a meeting in order to see what really goes on behind the scenes.
Coplay's 150 year anniversary will be coming up in 2019 and Recker said the borough should start planning for it now by forming a sesquicentennial committee. He said he wants it to be the greatest event the borough has ever held.
In other business, Councilman Charles Sodl suggested the borough purchasing a bucket truck.
"We are behind the times by not having a bucket truck," Sodl said.
Sodl added that he, along with Councilman Steve Burker, have already started to research the process and expense of obtaining one. The bucket truck would be used for tasks such as trimming trees, taking the American flag down and hanging up Christmas lights every year. As of now, a ladder is used for the majority of these tasks.
Council unanimously agreed to research purchasing a bucket truck.
Councilman Bill Leiner spoke on the Coplay Shade Tree Commission. The purpose of the commission would be to do maintenance on the trees located throughout the borough. This would include disposing rid of unwanted, dying trees as well as planting new trees.
Leiner said the committee has fallen by the wayside over the years.
Chief of Police Vincent Genovese presented his report for the month of May. There were 219 calls, 2 retail theft arrests, 31 traffic citations and 62 parking tickets 40 of which were from street cleaning.
