Coplay American Legion baseball is forging ahead

The Coplay American Legion baseball program, legendary in Lehigh Valley sports folklore, has a bright future ahead.

Judy Podorsky, who headed the legion's baseball program for several decades, is no longer involved with operations. A new team is now in place.

The announcement was made by Ed Flipovits, committee president, and Chris Schmidt, second in charge.

Other offices filled include the posts of secretary and treasurer, along with a long list of committee members, who will bring their talents and experience to the legion's baseball program.

Bill Loy, committee spokesman, said Allentown Central Catholic High School's baseball team is committed to playing its varsity baseball games in 2015 at Sammy Balliet Stadium.

Night games, a staple at the stadium for years, were discontinued a few years ago because the stadium lights were in disrepair. At the time, it was believed a storm caused damage to the lights.

Loy said one of the committee's priorities is to bring back the stadium lights for night games in two to three years.

The PIAA playoff baseball games, which were tradionally held at Sammy Balliet Stadium, will return once the lights are restored, according to Loy..

Work in the fieldhouse is currently taking place, everything from repairs to upgrades, including the locker-room, office and refreshment stand. The field is also being upgraded and bleacher changes made,

"There is no longer an admission fee," Loy said.

He added, however. people can make donations while at the games.

The team baseball roster consists of 18 players, which is favorably looked upon.

The Coplay Legion's Connie Mack team has merged with its counterpart in Fullerton.

"We are on the right track, there will be further announcements as we move ahead," Loy noted.
