Sediment and environmental factors have been cited as the reasons Whitehall Township's desires to demolish the dam along the Coplay Creek.
Essroc Cement, owner of the dam on the creek outside of Egypt, will be contacted by the township for the proposed project. The Ironton Rail-Trail is near the creek.
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., recently said he has met with an Essroc representative regarding obtaining dam removal approvals from Essroc for the dam on Coplay Creek.
Hozza also said Wildlands Conservancy would be the leased and grant writer for the project.
There has been no cost estimate provided for the task.
Should approvals and grant submission move forward, the dam removal would take place later this year.
Township officials, Hozza and purchasing and finance directors recently visited Lower Macungie Township to discuss the Caselle financial software. Lower Macungie, Salisbury and Palmer townships have implemented the Caselle system for several years. Whitehall is now considering using the program.
Verizon Wireless representative met with Hozza for placement of a cellular tower within the township. Should the tower be placed on township property, Verizon would pay a fee to the township for the arrangement.
Last Saturday an electronics recycling event was held in the township. Along with TVs, computers and cellular phones, document shredding was available to the public.
