Coplay woman tells council workmen disrupt her sleep

A Coplay Borough resident is frustrated with men working on the radio frequency cell towers in town.

A citizen expressed her frustration at the May 13 borough council meeting and said between the hours of 12:30 and 3:30 a.m. she is woken up three times due to the workers testing some sort of device that "sounded like a smoke alarm."

"I want you to write a letter to that company that leases those towers, and I want you to tell them that you can't do maintenance twenty-four seven," she said.

She stated she didn't care if the men began work at 6:30 a.m. and worked until 8 p.m.; she merely does not want them working all hours of the night and disturbing residents.

In other business, a motion was passed to hire Marianne Mann of Walnutport as a part-time clerk in the borough office effective May 19. Council voted for the measure 6-1 with Councilman William Leiner in opposition.

Leiner felt that people working for Coplay should be residents of Coplay.

Council also voted to hire Scott Cope as grant writer for the borough. Cope will donate his first 25 hours, and afterward will charge a rate of $88 per hour. Council voted to spend a maximum of $1,000 on grant writing for 2014.

Council appointed Chris Schmidt to the Park and Recreation Board with a term ending Dec. 31, 2014. Also appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board was Jennifer O'Boyle with a term ending Dec. 31, 2015.

Also, a motion was passed allowing the juvenile probation program to use the municipal building's gym at no cost for their defensive tactic training. The program will run June 3 through June 6.

Dean Heffelfinger Jr. was also hired as a part-time police officer for Coplay.

Council additionally voted to approve the Coplay Fire Department Coin Toss Saturday, May 31.

Council President Louis Bodish said the tire drop off on May 10 was a success with 64 tires being received.

Street sweeping will take place Thursday, May 15 and Friday, May 16.

A member of the borough will be riding with the cleaners to make sure that a thorough job is done.
