Whitehall discusses street lights
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. provided an update of the township to the Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners at its April 7 meeting.
The update included the possibility of the township converting its street lights to LED lights. The LED lights would offer a more efficient, brighter and cost-saving option than what the township currently has.
Hozza confirmed meeting with representatives of two seperate energy companies that outlined programs available for the "full conversion" of street lights to LED.
The firms, according to Hozza, are completing a similar conversion of lights in Bethlehem and Bristol Township.
Hozza and Deputy Mayor Jack Meyers met with representatives of Westside Hammer, Bethlehem, to discuss a quarterly update regarding its street light maintenance/ replacement and the 2014 budget item of LED conversion of the Rolling Hills development.
In other business, township officials met with the Whitehall-Coplay School District administration over the district's proposal to outsource its tax collection services and to dissolve the working relationship in place with the township's tax office.
Hozza reported that, after negotiations between the parties, the district and township reached a compromise, coming to terms with continuation of services.
The comissioners were also advised of a meeting between township Recreation Director Greg Mooney, the mayor and Ironton Rail-Trail Oversight Commission representatives over the design and paving of the spur route next to the Fort Deschler site, near MacArthur Road. Funding for the project is said to utilize a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant.
A working relationship between the township and the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce executive committee continues, as the mayor is keeping the chamber appriased of business development taking place in the township. Also, another session was held by Hozza and Commissioner Phillip Armstrong to continue plans for the upcoming Student Government Day.
