School board approves car dealership contract

The Whitehall-Coplay School Board approved the contract with Brown Daub Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, for the 2013-14 year at its April 14 meeting.

In an email after the meeting, Assistant to the Superintendent Dr. Lorie D. Hackett wrote, "The Brown Daub contract provides the district with a vehicle to use for athletics and in turn we allow them to advertise at our sports events, much like our contracts with Daku Auto and Polish Water Ice."

At the meeting, Superintendent John Corby made some details of the contract clear.

"The district is not furnishing Mr. [Robert] Hartman (district's athletic director) with a vehicle. The vehicle is furnished by Brown Daub."

Corby explained the benefits of this contract, stating the district does not pay for the millage when Hartman is traveling to games away from the campus.

Also at the meeting, the board approved the appointment of Fox Rothschild LLP as district solicitor for the 2014-15 school year. The annual retainer is $19,500 and the hourly rate is $185, this is effective July 1, and doesn't represent an increase to the district.

In other business, the board approved the amended 2013-14 school district calendar.

Corby explained that this doesn't affect the 2014-15 calendar, but instead is sent to the state to show the adjustment of snow days.

"We are showing them that we're making up those days," he said.

R & J Carpet Connection was awarded the bid to remove, replace and install carpet on the second floor at Steckel Elementary and the district office board room.

The cost of the project is $146,800 and is coming from the district's capital reserve.

"This fund can only be used for facilities and projects, not basic general expenses," Corby said.
