Whitehall Township gears up for recycling contest

The Whitehall Township Environmental Advisory Council is preparing for an annual event held each May that allows residents to dispose of their unwanted computers, laptops, cell phones and other materials.

The program takes place at the township's municipal building. Officials make a record of what is brought to the site. The documentation allows the township to receive credits and funding based on a formula from the state.

The date for the recycling program is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 17. A number of volunteers assist EAC members and township officials in keeping the event moving smoothly.

For the fourth consecutive year, the township will accept legal documents and other important papers residents want shredded. Paper shredders will be on site and documents will be shredded in front of the persons bringing the materials.

Another successful program held in conjunction with the recycling project will be VIN etching of vehicles. The Lehigh County Auto Theft Task Force will have personnel present, including township police to have the private vehicles etched with VIN numbers in the event that their vehicle is stolen.

All of the services are free.

Old newspapers, magazines and telephone books are no longer accepted, in part because they are not in demand at recycling centers and don't provide cash subsidies as they formerly did. These materials have to be placed at curbside for pickup.

The township's large recycling center is also open on Range Road.
