Whitehall Township Commissioners discussed the future of the closed Mulligan's golf course at a recent workshop meeting.
Instead of golf, the Tri-Boro Soccer Associaton will utilize the field for its games.
The program has 823 youths enrolled, 660 of whom reside in the township.
Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr., who backs the program, said the township would enter into a license (lease) arrangement with the association. The agreement would be for a one-year-term, allowing for a renewal.
The association already uses grounds at Schadt Avenue Playground, West Catasauqua Playground and the Whitehall-Coplay School District campus.
The Range Road site would add a fourth for its growing program.
"I'm sure there won't be a problem," Board of Commissioners President Linda Snyder said in support of the program using the site.
The commissioners adopted a resolution approving the plans April 7.
Hozza said the long-term recreation plans call for the soccer program to locate at lands off MacArthur Road, next to the radio towers.
He said the park would be called Clear Channel Central Park.
Tri-Boro will make improvements to the building, including repairs, painting, general maintenance and grass cutting, at the Range Road site. It will have a volunteer committee to ensure the gates are locked when the day or evening's soccer play is finished.
There are lights on the grounds, Hozza said, which allows for night play.
