Library receives clean bill of financial health
An audit of the Coplay Public Library's financial books has received a passing grade.
Christopher Basile of France, Anderson, Basile & Company, PC, Emmaus, informed the Coplay Public Library Board at its March 13 meeting the library is financially sound.
"It's a clean opinion, that's what you want," Basile said.
Total support and revenue for 2013 amounted to $68,859 and expenses were $92,850. Total assets for 2013 amounted to $73,488 and total liabilities and net assets equal $73,488.
The decrease in assets of $97,214 in 2012 to $73,488 in 2013 is due to an increase in the costs of savings bonds, Basile said.
Basile said the library tax that was approved last year in the borough helped to bolster the library's assets.
"Things fell into place," he said. "I'm happy you got the tax."
Library board member and treasurer Mel Procanyn said revenues generated from the tax alone are not enough to keep the library financially sound into the future.
Board member Charles Sodl said the library will always have to find ways to generate additional revenue.
"It's always going to be an issue," Sodl said. "We have to deal with it."
Board President Janet Eisenhauer said while the library has an ongoing, aggressive fundraising campaign which generates funds, "There's only so much you can do with fundraising."
The board unanimously approved the audit.
The next step is for the borough to prepare a 990 form which is due May 15.
In other business, Procanyn suggested the board revisit policies relating to employee sick and vacation days and holidays.
"I believe because of our budget, we are going to have to eliminate sick days after March 31," he said. "These are areas we can save $4,000."
Eisenhauer said she wants the board to review library policies and discuss Procanyn's recommendation at a future meeting.
"I just want to do it right," Sodl said of any changes. "You can't keep taking away and not give them [library employees] anything. That's just wrong. We need to do our due diligence and look at everything."
Any changes the library desires to enact must be approved by the Coplay Borough Council.
Library board members also agreed to look into a borough organization that has a games license to sponsor future library fundraising events.
