Coplay Recreation and Welfare group to support many community events

Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association has committed to the ongoing street banner project in the borough.

The agreement is that the association will pay for 10 banners and the metal supports.

The association made the commitment with the borough's planning commission at its Feb. 20 meeting.

Coplay Borough Councilman Charles Sodl said it would be great if as many as 50 banners could be sponsored by individuals, families, businesses and organizations, covering Second, Chestnut, Hokendauqua and Ruch streets.

The association said the community bulletin board, next to the war memorial plaza on Chestnut Street, could be utilized to have the project reach more people.

The banners depict the historic Saylor Cement Kilns and the municipal building.

In order to attract new members of the association, it was agreed to look into holding meetings at sites outside of the borough, including the Lehigh County Historical Museum and the Lehigh County Zoo.

The organization once met and toured the Atlas Cement Memorial Museum.

Looking ahead to its annual membership drive in June, the organization is considering constructing a seven-foot-tall plywood thermometer. A red tape would measure contributions it received on a weekly basis.

The association started planning for the children's community Easter egg hunt. The hunt will be held April 19, the day before Easter Sunday, on St. Peter's Catholic Church grounds.
