Breakfast at fire company benefits tot hit by car

Friends, family and Lehigh Valley residents came out Jan. 19 for a benefit breakfast to help raise funds for Annabelle Ruth, 3, of Allentown, who was injured Oct. 30, 2013, in a hit-and-run near her St. John's Street home.

Lori and Roger Hamm of South Whitehall created a plan to raise money needed to pay the expenses not covered by medical assistance for their great-niece Annabelle.

The plan included the breakfast at Community Fire Company No. 1, Schnecksville, as well as an upcoming bingo at Jordan Lutheran Church, Orefield.

According to Lori Hamm, Annabelle was first transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, after the accident but was later flown to Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania for intensive care due to the severity of her injuries.

"She was on life support for three to four days while in the hospital," Lori Hamm said. "Fortunately, she has no evidence of a neurological deficit."

However, she does limp due to fractures in her pelvis and left leg, Lori Hamm explained.

Lori Hamm said Annabelle's subsequent surgery at CHOP and rehabilitation at Good Shepherd, Muhlenberg, created a large expense for her mom, Kayleigh Hamm, who lives with her mother Karen Hamm.

The driver who hit Annabelle has been arrested and is awaiting trial now, she said.

The benefit bingo will be March 15. Doors open 11:30 a.m. Bingo begins at 1 p.m.
