Two Upper Macungie residents recently had a fundraiser to support their local fire department.
Classmates Jordan Brunnavend and Juliet Anen, of Jaindl Elementary School, were instrumental in selling hot chocolate and cookies during the Good Will Fire Company, Trexlertown, annual Santa Run Dec. 21, 2013.
The first graders were busy working with their parents and siblings to be ready for the Santa Run.
Together, they collected $296.17, which was then donated to the fire department.
"Last year, our 6-year-old daughter Juliet Anen was inspired by Hurricane Sandy and decided to host a hot cocoa fundraiser during the Santa Run," her mother Karyn Anen said. "She raised more than $130 from our friends, family and neighbors.
"This year, we decided to continue her mission of giving back to our community."
Karyn Anen added they were also inspired by the Sandy Hook School Foundation, formed following the massacre at the elementary school.
While residents of Newtown, Conn. were planning to mark the one-year anniversary with private memorial services, township officials asked them to honor those killed through acts of service and kindness.
In addition, the families urged people to find ways to give back to their own communities, Karyn Anen said.
"With that in mind, our family hosted the hot chocolate fundraiser and gave all proceeds to the Good Will Fire Company of Trexlertown," said Karyn Anen. "We appreciate their service and dedication to our local community."
Jordan's parents are Lisa and Jason Brunnavend. Juliet's parents are Rob and Karyn Anen, all of Breinigsville.
