The members of Coplay Borough Council are eager to see their resurrected parks and recreation board succeed.

But some disagreement exists on whether supporting the idea should mean looking outside borough borders.

Hokendauqua resident Chris Schmidt, who also serves as vice president of Coplay Sports, applied for a vacant position on the parks and rec board. However, he rescinded his application after learning the borough had a sufficient number of resident candidates.

Still, at least one councilman wants Schmidt to be involved.

"It's hard to get people who are really serious," said Councilman Steve Burker at Tuesday night's council meeting.

The night before, Burker organized a meeting for people interested in resurrecting the parks and rec board, which had not met for the past two years.

"We're all here as volunteers. And anyone who wants to give up their time for the good of Coplay, we welcome that," he said Monday night.

Ordinance No. 764 states in its title it is "an ordinance establishing and authorizing the creation of a park and recreation board consisting of persons who reside within the borough of Coplay."

Burker recommended Schmidt because the board had not met for two years, leading him to believe residents weren't interested in serving. He suggested amending the ordinance to allow the board to appoint nonresidents in the absence of resident candidates.

"It's hard enough to get volunteers to begin with," he said. "I don't know how dedicated these people are going to be."

Solicitor James Preston said the borough can amend the ordinance to add members to the board or allow nonresidents to serve. However, council took no official action.
