Coplay column

The Coplay Fire Department will hold an open house at the fire station, 165 Cherry St., Saturday, noon to 4 p.m., in celebration of National Fire Prevention Week.

Programs and events are planned for children, along with demonstrations the entire family can enjoy.

The annual Coplay Halloween parade is set for Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Considered by some to be one of the most exciting Halloween parades in the area, it is hosted by the Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association.

Five musical groups will participate in the parade. These include the Whitehall High School Zephyr Marching Band, the East Hills Middle School Band from the Bethlehem Area School District, the Wind Gap Drum & Bugle Corps, the Rajah Oriental Band and the Allentown Almost Marching Band.

Also walking in the parade will be 7-year-old Paige Hardenberg of Schnecksville, crowned National American Miss Pennsylvania. She recently donated 24 boxes of school supplies to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation, a local day care, library and elementary school.

The Coplay Fire Department will have its apparatus and trucks in the parade.

The rain date is Tuesday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m.

Tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 11, noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Coplay library will hold a used book sale in the basement along with a bake sale featuring home made cakes and cookies.

A Taking Better Pictures program will also be offered to the public at the library, Fifth and Center streets, 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.

Nationally award winning photographer and Press editor Johanna S. Billings, will be the featured speaker.

Trinity United Church of Christ will hold a harvest craft and vendor show 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the American Club of Coplay Pavilion.

The show presents a good opportunity to start Christmas shopping.

Previously, the church held such events at its fellowship hall, located in the church basement.

The Coplay Garden Club will meet Thursday, Oct. 24, in the St. John's Lutheran Church social hall, beginning at 7 p.m.

Sue Kittek, a Penn State master gardner and freelance garden columnist, will present a program on scented geraniums.
