Liberty’s girls tennis team hosted city rival Bethlehem Catholic to a 5-1 victory over the Golden Hawks on Sept. 14.

In the most competitive match of the day, however, Becahi’s Bianca Ciarrocca and Ruby Robinson won in three sets over Kaylin Zhang and Naomi Domina, 1-6, 7-6, 10-5.

“We kept pushing, and we were trying to hit stronger points and focusing on getting the ball to stay in because of the wind,” said Ciarrocca. “I like my crosscourts when I can get the ball deep, and running from one side of the court to another, I had to do that a couple times. There were a couple times we had to redo the point (questionable line calls), but overall, I think we played really well, and they were also really good.”

The Hawks led, 4-2, in the second set, but Zhang and Domina came back to force a tiebreak.

“They did have good shots,” said Robinson.

But the Hawks pulled through to take the second set tiebreak, 10-8

“You just need to get certain balls and see where their weaknesses are,” Robinson said. “I haven’t won against Liberty yet, so it was a really good feeling that we came up with a win in the end.”

Becahi coach Dan Arkans said that the No. 2 doubles match was the Hawks’ first win against Liberty in his four years as head coach.

“[Bianca and Ruby] are a good doubles team, so I don’t know what happened in the first set, exactly,” he said. “I know they were getting angry about the line calls, so it was great composure by them to settle down and come back and play good doubles. It was just a good doubles match. Not a lot of errors.”

In another competitive match, Liberty’s Polina Dorman won at No. 3 singles against Brooke Mayer, 6-2, 6-4.

“I think Polina got into a rhythm in that first set, and Brooke wasn’t there yet, and then it kind of switched,” said Liberty coach Sarah Lazarchak. “Brooke was getting more consistent in the second set, and it kind of threw Polina off. She just had to adjust her game because Brooke was hitting a variety of shots.”

Coach Arkans said that Mayer thought she should’ve won the second set, but Arkans also noted Dorman’s high lobs that made it difficult for Mayer.

“She was there,” he said, “but she’s so new to singles, and I think she reacts to the other person.”

At No. 1 singles, Corinne Mumma defeated Sasha Mathew, 6-3, 6-0, and at No. 2 singles, Sarah Zhang defeated Caroline Dunn, 6-1, 6-1.

Diya Rana and Stella Georgalas won at No. 3 doubles over Alex Torres and Madelyn Araniego, 6-4, 6-1, and

Ainsley Kutz and Addison Poindexter won by forfeit at No. 4 doubles.

“This group is extremely hardworking,” Coach Lazarchak said. “The matches have been tougher this year, and they’re not giving up, and I think that’s why we have the record we have right now (9-2). I think it’s a mix of players getting better and that we lost our key doubles players, so we have a whole new doubles lineup this year, but also, the district is really strong.”
