NHS wins two games

The Northampton girls varsity soccer team is on a bit of a winning streak after claiming two divisional victories in their last two games.

A win versus Liberty on Sept. 27, and versus Emmaus on Oct, 1, give the team a 7-7 record overall as they move into the final two weeks of the season, looking to claim a District 11 playoff berth.

The girls started the week with a tough loss to Easton on Sept. 25. Despite a strong defense that kept Easton scoreless through the first period, and eight saves overall by Northampton goalkeeper Anna Keffer, Easton overcame in the 2nd half and would defeat the Kids by two goals.

So, as the Kids took the field against Liberty, they were looking for redemption.

Northampton came out strong in the first half with goals by Sarah Fribance and frequent Northampton playmaker Leandra Sterner. Both goals in the first were assisted by Haley Fribance.

Liberty would come back to score once in the second half but Northampton answered quickly with yet another goal by Sterner. Overall, the Liberty goalkeeper would fend off 11 Northampton goal attempts as Northampton kept the pressure on. In the end, the girls claimed their first victory of the week in a 3-1 win over Liberty.

On Oct. 1, the girls once again took the field for another divisional match, this time against Emmaus. The teams battled through the first half with no scores allowed by either team. The game looked as though it could end without a goal when Northampton broke through with a goal from Leandra Sterner, assisted by Brianna Dotter. Goalkeeper Keffer made a total of four saves for the night and allowed none and the girls won 1-0.

In a year when rebuilding, the team is regaining a love of the game has been a top priority, one Northampton player in particular has taken a central role on the team and continues to lead her team to victory. Senior Leandra Sterner continues to be a driving force on the team with a total of 19 goals and four assists 19 goals and four assists this season. This includes three hat tricks during September and goals in nearly every game played this season.

Sterner's achievements this season add to her 43 career goals and 13 career assists. Identified early in the season by coach Gus Belaires as one of the leaders on the team, Sterner has proven that prediction right and continues to spur her team on to victory.

Northampton is looking forward to some tough conference matches this week against Whitehall on Oct. 3, and Parkland on Oct. 7.
