Kids continue slide, things won't get easier

It goes without saying that last week's 42-7 defeat against Central Catholic was demoralizing for the Northampton program.

The loss dropped the Kids to 0-5 on the season and continued their defensive struggles by giving up over 40 points for fifth straight game this year. It also marked the fifth straight game the Kids have had a different lineup across the offensive line to complicate matters.

It's also the fifth straight game that head coach Jeff Brosky has had to paint a positive picture amid a season that has had few highlights.

"I had a meeting with the captains this week and asked them what they thought would help and they said a win," Brosky said. "The mood is pretty good, but things don't get any easier for us."

Winning would obviously cure the losing ailment the Kids are dealing with right now, but the schedule doesn't prescribe any let up in the coming weeks, as Northampton takes on Emmaus (3-2, 3-1) this week and Easton (4-1, 3-1) the following week. The Green Hornets just knocked off the Rovers 14-7 last week in the biggest upset of the season thus far, which hopefully can play into Northampton's hands as they take on a team coming off an emotional high.

"I think teams will overlook us the rest of the season and that's a card we're going to have to play if we want to steal a win," said Brosky. "When you haven't won a game, teams tend to not give you their best effort and can overlook you. We hope that can benefit us."

But what would really benefit Northampton is something they've been struggling with all year defensive issues, offensive line fluctuation and lack of playmakers. It's a frustrating season to say the least, as the Kids final three games of the LVC schedule include Freedom (1-4), Liberty (2-3) and Whitehall (4-1). Brosky knows that looking ahead to the future for development is something he will look for, as well as what he's already been forced to do because of injuries, but giving this senior class a fighting chance until the end is also important.

"This senior group is really a good group," he said. "I'm not going to sell them out. Hopefully the younger kids get the experience they need and we all keep fighting till the end."
