Girls win one, drop one

The Northampton girls varsity volleyball team continued a positive season last week with two strong showings against Allentown Central Catholic and William Allen High School.

Though Northampton would end the week with one loss and one win, coach Morgan Litak and the varsity squad continue to be proud of what they have achieved on the court this season.

Northampton met Central Catholic on Wednesday, Sept. 25, in a close match that would end in three games with a Northampton loss. With scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 18-15 the Northampton team, particularly the defense, fought hard.

"They were all really close matches," recalls Litak. "I was really very proud, our defense was really strong and we kept the matches close."

In their second contest of the week, Northampton traveled to William Allen on Thursday, Sept. 26. Once again, the game would only last three matches, but this time Northampton would emerge victorious with scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-19.

With a little more breathing room in this game, Litak was able to give playing time of some of the junior varsity players such as Amanda Egry and Alex Beaben as well as some players that have not seen a lot of playing time this season, including outside hitters Sarah Faust and Leah Redline. All the players really helped to "keep the energy on the court," according to Litak, and helped secure a Northampton win.

Looking toward the final weeks of their season, the girls have several conference matchups on the horizon. At press time, Northampton was preparing to meet Easton on Oct. 1, as well as Liberty on Oct. 3, and then Whitehall on Oct. 7.

"We have not met Liberty yet but we think they will be a strong team, a lot like Whitehall," said Litak.

Litak goes on to predict the girls will take what they've learned so far this year and redeem themselves from the loss they suffered to Whitehall earlier in the season. According to Litak, the team's winning strategy all comes down to teamwork.

"We have been focusing on working together as a team," she said. "On having six players come together as one on the court."
