Field hockey shuts out ACC
Seven different players tallied goals for the Parkland field hockey team, which bounced back from a 1-0 overtime loss to Allen, defeating Central Catholic 9-0 last Monday afternoon at Parkland High School.
The Trojans dominated the Vikettes from the opening whistle and poured in the goals. The young Trojans, which return only four starters from last year's team, have shown improvement throughout the season.
"Over the past couple of weeks our younger kids have really gelled with the rest of the team," said Trojan head coach Michelle Steele. "It's so important to just get them into the game. I just want to get them comfortable to the varsity game."
Parkland (9-4 overall, 7-3 LVC) created nearly all of the opportunities on net, outshooting Central 28-1.
It didn't take long for the Trojans to get on the scoreboard. Avery Semler hit home with just under two minutes gone for the first of her two first-half goals.
Parkland's next three goals came on its next three corners. Macey Talhelm laid off a low pass that was trapped on the stick of Hannah Pany. She took one touch and ripped a shot that beat Vikettes goal keeper Jess Ondrovic.
Pany's second goal came on good stick work from her and Semler, who traded passes until Pany decided to have a go and scored.
Talhelm and Hannah Peters also contributed first-half goals for the Trojans.
All of the scoring was nice, but Steele took some other positives out of the game.
"Besides the scoring, I tell the girls let's just focus on things we need to work on," noted Steele. "Talking is something we need to work on big time. It's so easy to do, but it's something we're having trouble with. Our passing improves greatly when we talk."
Missy Paulus, Kirby Perosa, and Brooke Sherwin were the other goal scorers for Parkland.
Ondrovic did her best to keep Central in the contest. She made 18 saves. Parkland's Sydney Cope stopped the lone Vikettes shot, and teammate Lauren Hess was not forced to make a save in her second half action.
