People driving across the Coplay-Northampton Bridge during the late afternoon hours are sometimes backed up onto Chestnut Street in Coplay.
Questions and comments have circulated regarding what will happen in late 2014 when the bridge closes for two years for reconstruction. Some believe gridlock and increasing traffic backups will occur.
The commute is worse for those residing in Northampton and the townships outside the borough.
The most likely routes for commuters include the Cementon-Northampton Bridge, Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge and, perhaps, the West Catasauqua-Race Street span.
The question is: will motorists decide to use the new Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge as an alternative? More than likely, yes.
Local officials and police have been analyzing various traffic scenarios. However, little relief has been offered in keeping with the slogan, "Temporary Inconvenience-Permanent Improvements."
Another factor at play is the impact the bridge closure will have on Route 22.
The Coplay-Northampton Bridge and the Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge are county-owned bridges.
