Boys pile up wins

Northampton boys soccer registered three more wins to what is becoming an incredible season.

They played and defeated Freedom, Central Catholic and Allen to up its record to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the LVC. The Kids win on Monday meant they clinched their fourth-straight berth in the District 11 AAA playoffs.

Last Tuesday, Northampton squeaked out a 2-1 victory over Freedom thanks to the play of senior forward Tim Kelly. Kelly scored twice in the second half. His first goal came from a pass from John Yeaw, as Yeaw received his pass from Cameron Peploe, who had a great game all day in center midfield. Yeaw slotted the ball across the box and Kelly buried the shot far post with 17 minutes remaining in the game.

Four minutes later Northampton got the game-winner when Nate Treichler kept a ball alive near the end line and got just enough on the ball to find Kelly, who used the Freedom defender's help to poke the ball past keeper Josh Wasilik.

Freedom got on the board first early in the second half off of a corner kick as Alex Thomas finished a ball played to him by Quinn Ackerman just three minutes in.

On Thursday, the boys traveled to Lehigh County fields and won another game in overtime, 4-3 over Central Catholic. Scoring for Northampton were: Julian Santos with a pair, Sam Gaye and John Yeaw. Tim Kelly added two assists. Dave Hornyak and Cameron Peploe each notched one assist in the contest. The game was marred with physcial play, that which lead to four Northampton players getting yellow cards, as well as 2 members of the coaching staff.

Central trailed by two with under 8 minutes to play when they scored on a penalty kick and off of a cross right before the time expired. Santos had the winning goal off of a ball played to him by Hornyak right in front of the net. The play was set up by Sam Gaye's breakaway. Gaye was taken down right outside the box after a Central player grabbed the back of his jersey and pulled him down from behind right as Gaye was heading towards the goal. Nevertheless, the Kids prevailed.

Always a pesky opponent, Allen came to Wolf Field on Monday looking to spoil the recent success Northampton has been having. In the past, they have been a thorn in the side of the Konkrete Kids. They ended the 2011 season beating the Kids 4-1 in a District 11 playoff game. In 2012, the teams fought to a well-played, 0-0 tie. The result in 2013 would not fare well for the Canaries, though.

Sam Gaye scored the first goal off of a penalty kick ten minutes into the match. Julian Santos was taken down in the box and Gaye finished the ball low and to the far post. Three minutes later, Ian Miller scored the second goal off of a free kick about 30 yards away. A.J. Schroettner was tripped up setting up the play. Miller's shot hooked to the far post and off of an Allen defender and into the goal. Allen would manage to cut the lead to one with four minutes left before halftime. Atroy Reid scored off a pass from Cameron Rockwelll inside the box.

Allen's attack posed problems the entire second half, but the Kids defense and goalkeeping stepped up and played big. Miller, Chris Rehrig, Tyler Andrews and John Yeaw made sure Allen wouldnt get the tie and send the game into overtime. Keeper Austin Cooper also had some huge saves in the second half. At one point, Cooper stopped a Rockwell shot point blank right in front of the goal.

The Kids have a big game versus Easton on Wednesday at Wolf Field. Both squads are in first place in their respective divisions in the LVC. Northampton will then play Liberty Saturday at Nazareth in the Don Hunt Memorial Classic, also known as league play day.
