Pa. honey queen to spread the buzz at national event
Did you know honeybees account for 80 percent of all insect pollination?
Without this pollination, there would be a significant decrease in the number of fruit and vegetables produced.
Did you also know honeybees travel to more than 2 million flowers to produce 1 pound of honey, and each bee only produces 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime?
2013 Pennsylvania Honey Queen Elena Hoffman, will share these facts 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 17 when she attends National Honey Bee Day events, sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Beekeepers Association, at the Wildlands Conservancy, Emmaus.
Hoffman will provide information on the importance of honeybees, the beekeeper's role, pollination and products from the hive.
She will also present a cooking demonstration to the public at 1 p.m.
Hoffman, 18, is the daughter of Brian Hoffman and Beverly Hoffman of Millmont.
She is a graduate of Mifflinburg Area High School.
While in high school, Hoffman received the President's Award for Educational Excellence, the Xerox Award for innovation and information technology, and was named to the National Honor Society.
She will be attending West Chester University to pursue a degree in pre-med.
Outside school, Hoffman works with her father in their apiary maintaining the hives and extracting honey.
Beekeepers will man exhibits and answer questions at this rain or shine event.
Vistors can see the queen bee busily laying eggs in the observation hive, learn about the tools of the trade, how honey is extracted from the comb and sample the sweetness of raw honey.
There will also be honey products for sale.
The children will enjoy free coloring books, honey candy and educational games about the roles of honeybees, drones and the Queen in the hive.
The Lehigh Valley Beekeepers Association was founded in 1921 and has a membership of more than 125 beekeepers and gardeners.
Meetings are open to the public; learn more by visiting Lehighvalleybeekeepers.org.
