Those who enjoy the sight of tree-lined streets in the borough should not expect tree plantings along sidewalks anytime in the near future.
Some trees on Third Street and other areas could be removed because the roots have caused sidewalks to lift.
The borough in recent years cut down other such trees, beginning with Second Street.
The borough's shade tree commission, first put in place in 1969 by borough council, has been out of business for a number of years.
Trees are no longer planted on small islands along concrete walks.
Some folks in town want to see trees in the borough remain and others want them removed.
Pictures from the early 1930s show huge trees graced the walks on South Front Street.

If you have sneakers you no longer use, you can get rid of them via a large container in lobby of the borough hall on South Fourth Street.
The sneakers will end up going to someone who needs them, as the footwear is recycled.

Alleys in the borough have no stop signs where they intersect with streets or other alleys.
That is not the case in Northampton.
The issue of stop signs along alleys came up concerning a north-south alley that motorists drive as a shorter route, mostly to reach Chestnut Street.
Some people living in the area have spoken of safety concerns, mostly involving children.
If no stop sign is put in place, citizens asked whether a sign could be erected reading "Children at Play."
Most drivers, however, do slow down when approaching the intersection, which is between Third and Fourth streets.

Although the town has no youth football organization, boys in the borough are playing the game, with the Hokendauqua Athletic Association in Whitehall Township.
The Eagles, wearing in black and gold, feature boys from Coplay on all of teams, from flags on up.
Combining township and borough boys on the same squad makes for a natural fit because they attend the same schools.
Likewise, Whitehall and Coplay girls work together to form cheerleading squads.
