Allentown West Rotary pig roast fundraiser aids Engineers Without Borders work in Africa

The Allentown West Rotary Club recently sponsored a pig roast at Ontelaunee Park, Lynn Township.

The club is involved with a new project, Engineers Without Borders.

"We are rebuilding the infrastructure," said Herb Klotz, a member of both the Rotary and the Engineers, said at the June 29 event. They travel to Mattru in Sierra Leone, an African country ravaged during the civil war in the 1990s.

Much of the work has been done at the Centennial School.

This is the third year the group has traveled to Africa twice a year for two-week trips.

The Engineers partner with Rotary to provide water and electricity.

Rotary has provided one grant in support of the work and a second one will be used to refurbish three buildings, the chemistry and biology rooms and a dining hall, needing new roofs.

A well was drilled and solar power provides electricity.

Klotz said students are at the school every night keeping up with their studies. A thousand students attend the school.

A team has 15 members and the leader is Diane Dunn of Fogelsville.

Gary Engelhardt and Gwenn Carr are also members of both organizations.

Rotary Club President Lise Twilford invited anyone interested in joining the club to join members at a breakfast meeting 7:30 a.m. Wednesdays at Luther Crest Retirement Community, South Whitehall. For information go to ewb-lvp.org.
