Upper Macungie supervisors had a mid-year budget meeting to review the township's finances and to determine whether they are meeting budget expectations.
Fire Commissioner Grant Grim voiced concerns about the workmen's compensation insurance for firefighters.
The policy renewed in July and some carriers will not insure for cancer.
The board agreed to check with carrier, E.M.C.and agent Brown and Brown, to ascertain whether the township will have cancer coverage for the firefighters.
Police budget items were the ones most out of line. Over-budget issues included uniforms, office supplies, custodial supplies, vehicle maintenance and several minor issues.
However, this is not a reflection on the spending practices of the department but rather a result of the start-up costs that could not be adequately predicted.
In 2014, the budget will be addressed in a more knowledgeable fashion as some of the budget items will not occur or will not need such an amount of funding.
Supervisor Sam Ashmar reported on the surplus auction at Independent Park to dispose of the inventory of the disbanded Berks Lehigh Regional Police Department.
Approximate reimbursement totals were $357,000 for Upper Macungie, $78,000 for Maxatawny Township, $30,000 for Topton Borough and $4,000 for Lyons Borough.
This is the first disbursement for the municipalities.
It appears other departments are close to budget expectations and will be adequately funded through the year.
