'Small on Scale' has 'big' showing
For 36 years, dollhouse and miniatures enthusiasts have gathered for their annual show, held this year July 14, at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, Fogelsville.
In 1978, Lehigh Valley "Small on Scale" began with the first dollhouse exhibit to raise money for Lehigh Valley Child Care.
Shortly thereafter, a club was formed and they have continued to raise funds each year for charitable and educational purposes.
President Mary Breidinger, of Bethlehem, said the club has about 20 members who are miniatures' enthusiasts.
They meet 7-9:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St., Macungie.
After a brief business meeting, members work on a project.
Beginners, visitors and new members are always welcome and often miniature crafting skills are taught.
For their annual show, members work on a project to display and/or sell. This year's project was an alcove.
"Prior to the show, members were treated to a full-day workshop by Mike Barbour, of Columbia, Md., on the art of making peacocks," Breidinger said.
Barbour travels to various shows around the country and works on commissioned projects.
"Six years ago, I made a dollhouse for a friend," Barbour said. "I have always been fascinated with miniatures and come from a very crafty family."
Vendors traveled from within Pennsylvania and from other states to display their miniatures and supplies at the July 14 show.
The next show is scheduled for July 13, 2014, at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center, Fogelsville.
