LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Musical fundraiser on July 20 for Miracle League

An evening of music, performed by nearly 60 individuals of all ages, is planned for July 20 in Union United Church of Christ grove, Neffs.

The program is a fundraiser for the Miracle League of the Lehigh Valley, which provides an opportunity for physically and mentally challenged youngsters to play baseball.

The organization also sponsors seasonal activities and holiday events for participants.

Doug Kern, who was severely injured in a football game during his senior year at Parkland High School, is taking part in a yearlong compaign to raise funds for the Miracle League.

Doug and his wife, Claire, liked the idea of a music program that would involve and entertain many people.

They asked Roni and Matt Gerry, who run a music studio in Schnecksville, for assistance.

The Gerrys embraced the cause of helping the Miracle League and put together a choir of students and friends from middle school age through adults.

They all have devoted many volunteer hours to rehearsals and performances in churches to raise awareness of the Miracle League and the forthcoming benefit at the Neffs Grove.

Choir members come from a wide area.

Several were recognized at the Freddy awards for performances in "Phantom of the Opera" at Parkland.

Quite a few adults come from Roni Gerry's choir at Holy Trinity Church, Egypt.

The singers are accompanied by Christine Lerew on piano and the Gerry sons on drums and electric bass.

The activities begin at 4:30 p.m. with Kory Burrell providing the first hour of entertainment.

Refreshments, including hamburgers, hot dogs, turkey barbecue and baked goods will be available for purchase.

Selections will include a variety of music from Broadway to rock and everything in between.

Although Miracle League coaches and helpers are volunteers, the organization needs funds for upkeep of the field and facilities at the Heidelberg Township site.

The field, which is a special surface for safety, is soon due for replacement.

The Neffs event is free but donations will be accepted.

In case of rain, everything will take place inside Union UCC.

Five years ago, Doug Kern rode his handcycle in the New York City marathon as a fundraiser for the Miracle League.

Now nearly 60 years old, Kern plans to ride in the Palm Beach marathon Dec. 8, the culmination of his 2013 Miles for Miracles project.
