Breinigsville celebrates Independence Day
A heat warning advisory due to 90 degree temperatures July 6 did not deter guests from attending the 10th annual presentation of Schmoyer Funeral Home's Independence Day spectacular in Breinigsville.
Twenty-nine years ago, Carl Schmoyer III and his father Carl F. Jr. traveled to Ohio to purchase fireworks for the family's Fourth of July backyard celebration.
This has evoleved into an annual community event, with Independence Day fun beginning around 1 p.m. with the Robert M. Fegely VFW Post 8282 parade at Earl Adams Memorial Park.
An antique police car, restored by brothers Pete and Rick Trumbauer of Breinigsville, and six tractors from the Old Time Plow Boys Club Inc. drove through the park and along Breinigsville Road.
As the evening's festivities approached, fireworks enthusiasts awaited the display by Celebration Fireworks.
They played volleyball on the playground, purchased ice cold water from V-Bats members, ate sandwiches and ice cream, talked to family and friends and listened to The Municipal Band of Allentown and Cheryl Michaels perform.
Children and adults placed folding chairs and blankets in the grass and on sidewalks looking for the perfect spot to see the fireworks light up the night sky.
Music and patriotic songs rang out from the giant speakers on the ball field and Emmaus WTAP television personality Uncle Jeffrey broadcast live from the sidelines.
Before the fireworks display, Carl Schmoyer III addressed the crowd and read the 56 names and the respective states of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, along with some added information about July 6, 1776, the first public printing of the Declaration in The Pennsylvania Evening Post published in Philadelphia.
Steve Oplinger from Macungie, sang the "Star Spangled Banner."
Chinese lanterns decorated as American flags were released into the night sky as a preview of the evening's colorful pyromusical fireworks presentation.
Playing a huge role in making the show a success were Upper Macungie Fire Commissioner Grant Grim, Fire Inspector Keith Richard, Trexlertown Fire Chief Scott Weber, Assistant Chief Arlan Wright, James and John Ellermann, Jamie Gorr, Ryan Seckington, Mark Hahn, Randy Roberts, David Makovsky, Dean and Karen Miller and crew members including owner John Kemps from Celebration Fireworks.
Retired Fire Chief Forrest Hausman, along with Trexlertown Fire Police Capt. Calvin Fetherolf, handled traffic and parking. Assistant Fire Chief Roger Conrad, Trexlertown, handled safety.
