Alcohol in park OK, with notice
Supervisor Kathy Rader presented the Upper Macungie Township recreation report at the supervisors' June 6 meeting. The recreation committee proposed an amendment to regulations concerning serving alcohol at various functions.
If any group wants to have alcohol for an event, the township must receive 14 days notice.
If alcohol is served, a township representative must be on the premises.
Supervisors approved the change.
The pet CPR and first aid class was attended by eight while the junior golf lessons class had 10 registered for its spring class.
Three are already registered for the summer class. The tennis clinics were well represented with 23 in April, and 33 in the May classes. Classes for beginner and intermediate participants will be limited to 20 individuals.
The summer volleyball program an Upper Macungie Park will run until the end of August. Family Fishing in July has eight people signed up already.
Movies in the Park are scheduled for July 12 and Aug. 9. For more information, contact the township office.
The meeting of the recreation committee is 7 p.m. June 27 in the township building.
Police Chief Edgardo Colon was absent so Lt. Michael Sitoski gave the police report.
Total incidents for May were 776. The majority of these were traffic citations, 528. There were also 20 DUI arrests made.
Supervisor Sam Ashmar gave the Berks Lehigh Regional Police report.
Things are winding down with the pension shortfall the major issue.
Fire Commissioner Grant Grim presented the fire report for the month.
There were 65 fire inspections made and 103 emergency responses. EMS responses totaled 202.
He said a fire academy will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 12-16. This session will teach children ages 12 to 16 about the fire companies and the police department.
Grim also said Upper Macungie received a grant for $15,000 to be used toward the purchase of the command vehicle in conjunction with South Whitehall Township.
Rader requested a budget review meeting to see how the finances are and to see if the township is meeting budget expectations. No date was set for the meeting.
Peggy Konnick, who lives near Independent Park, complained to the board about persons in the park hitting golf balls which strike her house and land on her property.
Putt golf is the only type that is supposed to be played at Independent Park.
She asked supervisors to do something about this problem.
The board was sympathetic and will look into the problem.
