Longtime JCC employees honored for service

Seven employees of the Jewish Community Center, Allentown, were honored at a special Sunday brunch for their years of service, which all totaled equals 209 years.

JCC Board of Directors President Bobby Hammel welcomed the gathering of friends and relatives to salute these longtime employees.

"It is not common today to see employees so dedicated," Hammel said. "[These employees are the] spirit and soul of the JCC.

"We salute you and admire you."

JCC Executive Director Carol Kranitz Hammel presented the honorees with awards.

As each person was named, either a relative or friend spoke fondly about the individual.

Sheryl Block, the early childhood education director, has been an employee for 31 years.

She was honored by Hammel, who recalled when Block first came to the Allentown JCC, Len Gurvitz was the director and he made everyone feel welcome, and Block wanted to emulate him.

"Everything I learned began at the JCC," Block said.

Her grandchildren attend JCC classes.

"There is joy in having grandchildren there," Block added

JCC fitness trainer Clarence Cook, an employee for 30 years was introduced by his son OJ Cook, who spoke about growing up with this man who he admires so much.

Brenda Finberg, children's program director, has been at the JCC for 25 years.

Her son, Brad, and his wife, Robyn, introduced her to the audience.

Tom Graboritz has been employed in the maintenance department for 27 years.

His daughter Kimberly Jones spoke affectionately about him.

Sandy Newman, assistant executive director, has been employed there for 28 years.

She was introduced by Jodi Lovenwirth, JCC aquatic director, who said Newman's favorite saying is "you should be the change you want to see in the future."

Sue Pollan, early childhood education teacher for 31 years, was introduced by her daughters.

Peggy Waite, early childhood education gym teacher, has been employed at the JCC for 37 years.

She was introduced by Beverly Wasserman, who said Hal Grossman, a retired health director hired Waite.

"Peggy has taken many roles at the JCC and "always goes the extra mile for the kids she loves," Wasserman said.

After all the awards were given, the honorees led the singing of "That's What Friends Are For."
