Saucon Valley School Board members discussed tighter security measures at their Feb. 26 meeting.

Some proposed measures would include visitors surrendering their vehicle keys to main office personnel and requiring volunteers and school chaperons to submit to criminal background checks at the state and federal levels as well as child abuse background checks. The background checks, which cost $48.75, would be born by the individual volunteer. Superintendent Sandra Fellin said the measures are the result of a survey distributed to parents, faculty and police.

Regarding requiring background checks, Fellin said the school district "felt everybody should be cleared." The results of background checks, she said, are looked at on a case-by-case basis.

"We review it and decide," Fellin said. "A lot depends on what it is and when it happened." The survey also showed support for a full-time school resource officer.

If approved, the measures will be incorporated into the the elementary, middle and high schools student handbooks. The board indicated it will vote on the proposed measures at a future meeting.
