Orefield Middle School thespians to present 'Grease'
Orefield Middle School Theater students have been rehearsing their version of the movie and Broadway musical "Grease."
This two-act musical, based on the 1972 musical "Grease" by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, tells the story of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski and eight of their friends at Rydell High School as they navigate the complexities of love in 1959.
Tyler Haney portrays Danny Zuko.
"I [Zuko] am the love interest of Sandy," Haney said. "Sandy and I get into a lot of fights. We try to fix it but it is a complicated relationship."
"I am also the very cool, cool leader of the T-Birds."
Haney said he learned a great deal about the 1950s from his grandparents Maryann and Bruce Stocker.
Lisa Conte commented on her role as Sandy Dumbrowski.
"Sandy is new to Rydell High School," Conte said. "She is very sweet and innocent.
Liz Syslo, who plays Rizzo, and Malerie Razzis, who portrays Marty, commented on their roles as Pink Ladies.
"My character [Rizzo] is very sassy and sarcastic, and she doesn't like Sandy," Syslo said.
"Marty is very flirty and concerned with the way she looks," Razzis said. "Playing my character is a lot of fun because she is a very fun and bubbly character."
Alex Atiyeh, who plays Kenickie, and Reese Diaz, who portrays Doody, commented on their roles as T-Birds.
Atiyeh said Kenickie is the T-bird member who has the car called Grease Lighting.
"He is kind of like a tough guy," Atiyeh said. "He likes hanging out with the T-Birds and kind of picks on Danny for being with Sandy."
Diaz said Doody likes to joke around, hang out with the T-Birds and is dating Frenchy, played by Briana Jurta.
The musical is being directed and choreographed by Jonathan Lynch.
"'Grease' is simply fun," Lynch said. "The students love the movie and I knew they would enjoy performing it on our stage."
"When I first picked "Grease" most people thought it was just a high school show, but the students and I rose to the challenge," he said.
The theater students will perform "Grease" 7 p.m. March 5 and 6 and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 9 in the Orefield Middle School auditorium.
Tickets are $3 on March 5 and 6 and $5 on March 9. They will be available at the door.
Doors open 30 minutes prior to the performance.
