SPYA Biddy team takes Parkland League title

The SPYA Biddy baseball team had a great fall season, ending in a championship against Northwestern on October 13.

Coach Chris Giovenco's team was 8-1-1 going into the playoff weekend. With three big wins the final weekend, the team took the Parkland League Biddy Championship.

All the players developed throughout the year and each player truly contributed to the championship run.

Logan Dulaney had a big year at the plate and the cleanup hitter had some big hits in the first two games of the playoffs. In the first game of the playoffs, starting pitcher Jack Giovenco pitched three scoreless innings. He also had several key hits throughout the year.

TJ Khela played just about every position and did it well. His pitching and catching in the playoffs was solid as usual. AJ Carpenter was a key pitcher for the team and also had some key hits in the semifinal game against Hamilton Park. Evan Brandt, one of the emotional leaders on the team played great at third base during the year, and had some key line drive hits during the quarterfinal game.

Jake Wiener covered the outfield like no other, consistently making the great play. His lightning speed and quick bat were a primary reason for the team winning so many key games during the year. Quincy Brunner was one of the best second basemen in the entire league. His baseball smarts and speed were consistent each game. He scored a key run in the championship game to help seal the win.

Nathan Seibert was one of the hottest hitters on the team at the end of the year. He had key hits throughout the playoffs, including a clutch single in the fourth inning of the final to put SPYA ahead for good at 6-2. Andrew Kellar loved to swing the bat and had so many key hits throughout the year. His outfield and second base play was superb.

Owen Lehr had a great season at pitcher and shortstop and had some key hits in the playoffs and scored often when his buddy, Jonathan Maner drove him home with two home runs in the championship game. Maner was a key pitcher and could hit a ball as far as a 10-year old can hit one. William Meeker had many highlight reel catches including an amazing grab in right field in the quarterfinal game. He was a clutch fielder and also had some big hits against some of the best teams in the league.

Luke Meehan had a big year. He became one of the primary catchers on the team and also played a nice third base. He had so many big games hitting, but he had one of his biggest hits of the year when he smashed a hit to centerfield in the championship game.

Coach Giovenco and assistant coaches Ed Brandt, Pat Dulaney, Tejay Khela and Eric Lehr were thrilled to coach the squad throughout the season.
