It all adds up: Fogelsville Elementary celebrates regional math championship
Fogelsville Elementary School students traded their usual math lessons for cheers, competition and a championship celebration Oct. 13 as they were recognized for earning first place in the regional First in Math competition.
The school’s students solved an impressive 182,165 math problems, outperforming other schools across eastern Pennsylvania and earning top regional honors in the online program created by Dr. Robert Sun.
Sun joined the celebration and presented the school’s official championship banner to student representatives Saanvi, a first grader; Aiden L., a second grader; Evie, a third grader; Tyriek, a fourth grader; and Aeson, a fifth grader.
Designed to build math fluency through game-based learning, First in Math combines academic skills with the excitement of online competition, encouraging students to sharpen their abilities while earning points for their school.
The celebration also gave students a chance to test their skills in another of Sun’s creations, the 24 Game. Participants raced to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to turn a set of numbers into a total of 24, relying on both quick thinking and fast mental math. Top performers in the challenge were Erin, Sai-Rakshitn, Eshaan and Mackenzie. The assembly concluded with remarks from Parkland Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson and a T-shirt toss as students celebrated their accomplishment and the school championship banner hanging in their honor.
