Lopata putting together her game

For Hayden Lopata, field hockey was a matter of several adjustments in her freshman season last year.

“Last year, as a freshman, I played a lot of varsity,” recalled Lopta. “I had to learn how to adjust to the speed of the game and play a new position. It took some time to feel comfortable.”

Along with her on-field adjustments, Lopata also dealt with the psychological aspect.

“The biggest obstacle I’ve faced in my career is my confidence levels and finding myself within the sport,” added Lopata. “I’ve had to learn to overcome the mental aspect of the game and believe in my abilities and trust my performance.”

Last season, Lopata proved to be invaluable on the field playing offense and defense as her versatility was a plus. She ended the season with five goals and four assists.

It was a quick transition for her.

“But by the middle of last season I felt I was playing my best field hockey,” reflected Lopata. “I proved to my coaches that I was capable of being a force on the field.

“On this team to be a versatile player means being able to fill in whenever is needed.”

“Hayden was a utility player last season, as she played just about every position possible, with the exception of goalie,” said Saul. “She is a student of the game, asking questions and showing improvement with each practice and game.”

This season, Lopata apparently has put her whole game together. As a sophomore, she has taken a more active and stable part on the field, playing primarily as a right striker. She had eight goals in her first 14 games, the time of this writing.

“This year, she helps control the midfield, and defensively, she helps defend penalty corners,” added Saul. “Hayden has great receptions and is looking to improve her prescanning as the team transitions to attack.”

Lopata began playing the game in first grade after a friend encouraged her to try out for the youth team. Her consistent supporter has been her father, Michael. In addition to field hockey in the fall, Lopata plays lacrosse in the spring and also indoor field hockey in the winter for her Styx travel team.

“My biggest influence throughout my sports career is my dad,” said Lopta. “He has been my biggest supporter and has taught me how to celebrate my wins and overcome hardships. He has helped me push myself to become the athlete I am today and how to continue to make an impact on my team.”

After her strong freshman season, Lopata has taken on an elevated role with her team.

“My experience last year helped me become a leader this year and understand the responsibilities it took to be a successful varsity player,” beamed Lopata. “I also try to be a leader and encourage my teammates to push themselves to their full potential.”

The field hockey team will play at Nazareth in the opening round of districts Thursday afternoon.
