SkillsUSA students, administrative staff honored

Northwestern Lehigh School Board recognized two students for their involvement with SkillsUSA during the Oct. 21 school board meeting.

Both Madison Dunn and Ken Kerekes hold leadership positions and serve as Skills-USA board members.

They attended the Skills- USA annual meeting and awards breakfast on Oct. 14 and presented awards to other Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI) students.

SkillsUSA is a national career and technical student organization that helps students develop essential workplace skills and prepare for careers in skilled trades, technical fields, and other industries.

The board also recognized Anne Redline, administrative support staff for the high school principal, who is retiring after 28 years with the district.

Board members expressed their appreciation for her years of service, describing Redline as a valued member of the Northwestern Lehigh School District community.

In other personnel matters, the district announced plans to bring a new police officer into the school district.

The board also received updates on transportation staffing, including the return of two bus drivers and the hiring of a third.

The board approved the completion of a $12,500 memorandum of understanding from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

If completed and approved, funding from drug forfeiture moneys will support designated initiatives, including digital safety education, prevention activities, and other student support programs.

The recreation commission also received a $5,000 grant through the Lions Club.

Following the Night in the Country event, the Lions Club contacted the school district about available funding for organizations that meet its grant criteria.

Board member Becky Hite led the grant application.

The recreation commission will use the $5,000 award to improve fencing at the district’s recreation fields.

At the high school, 15 students participated in a fall SAT event, while approximately 50 students took part in an in-house PSAT administration.

Students will also participate in Red Ribbon Spirit Week, which promotes awareness of the dangers of drug and substance abuse and encourages healthy, drug-free choices.

A Safe Trick-or-Treat Halloween event was planned for the high school Oct. 26.

Both the boys and girls soccer teams captured Colonial League titles and will advance to championship competition.

The elementary schools recently held their annual Safety Days, with Northwestern Elementary hosting its event Oct. 9 and Weisenberg Elementary following Oct. 16.

School representatives thanked the community members and volunteers who helped make the events successful.

The Safety Days program provided the students with important safety information while strengthening connections between the schools and the community.

Both elementary schools also have fall activities planned.

Weisenberg’s Fun Fall Festival took place Oct. 23, with the theme “Fall into a Good Book.”

Northwestern’s Fun Fall event will take place Oct. 30 and will feature engaging activities, including a petting zoo and science activities.

Weisenberg Elementary School Principal Jill Bartlett expressed appreciation to the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and Partners In Education (P.I.E.) for their hard work and continued support in making school activities possible.

Veterans Day programs at both elementary schools will take place Nov. 11.

The events will honor veterans, recognize their service, and provide students with opportunities to learn from their experiences.

The board also reviewed four upcoming elementary school activities and programs, including Finding Gobi at Weisenberg on Dec. 10, Rope Warrior at Weisenberg on Jan. 15, 2027, a Children’s Theater 3 program at Northwestern on March 30 and an IronPigs game for Northwestern students on April 3.

The Northwestern Foundation held its annual clay target shoot Oct. 18.

The next fundraiser will be a Tiger Takeover at Ridgeview Winery on Nov. 7.
