North Catty denies appeal of building condemnation

During the Oct. 19 North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting, an appeal on the condemnation of 602 Walnut St. for building code violations was denied. The current owner and tenant made the appeal, but council denied it based on information provided.

Council gave them three more weeks to complete the repairs and get the building up to code. If this is not achieved by the deadline, the tenant will have to move out.

Under the treasurer report, sewer relief requests were approved for 1447 Washington St., 1219 Fifth St., 1064 Seventh St., 1217 Fifth St., 1335 Third St. and 1079 Howertown Road.

A handicap parking request for 351 Grove St. was not approved. Council took a moment to discuss creating a different process when a resident makes this kind of request. Council is seeking to narrow down the approvals to who really needs a handicap parking spot and to alleviate the requests falling solely on the police chief. Council has seen an increase in requests as of late.

In the solicitor report, an update was provided regarding a firetruck being made for North Catasauqua Fire Department. Attorney Stephanie Steward is looking into how to finance the vehicle via the Government Unit Debt Act. The borough has received two grants — one for $150,000 and another for $350,000. With a price tag of more than $1,000,000, there is still a balance.

Also during this report, the borough vehicle and equipment policies were passed. These include standard operating procedures.

Council President Peter Paone said one meeting has been held, with another in the works, to finalize the 2027 budget. Additionally, approval was made for the 2027-31 police contract.

In the office report, it was announced a 457B retirement plan was set up for all employees. Information meetings will be held next month regarding this simple IRA account.

Additionally, final steps are taking place to move pension funds to R.J. Hall/principal; to move disability and life insurance plans; to renew Capital Blue medical, dental and visions plans; and to renew/review all insurance policies. Final costs will be shared at the next meeting.

Borough council will next meet 7 p.m. Nov. 2 at the municipal office, 1066 Fourth St.
