Socci takes third at golf qualifier

Two Emmaus golfers advanced through last week’s District 11 qualifying tournament to reach this week’s championships.

Freshman Jacob Socci and junior Francis Anderson played their way into districts and join teammate Evan Walters in the championship tournament, which was held Tuesday at the Steel Club in Hellertown. Walters earned an exemption into districts based on reaching last year’s state championships.

Socci shot 76 to finish tied for third place at the qualifier, which was held last Tuesday at Shawnee Golf Resort.

After a bogey on the par-5 third hole, Socci bounced back with birdies on the sixth and ninth to make the turn at 1-under par 35.

He remained on that number until three straight bogeys and a double late in his back nine dropped him to 5-over par for the back nine before he parred the 18th to finish with a 4-over par 76.

Anderson also got off to a fast start and held on late. He made birdies on the second and sixth holes on the front nine to go along with a bogey on the fifth and made the turn at 1-under just like Socci.

Two double-bogeys and four bogeys on the back nine resulted in a 44 for the inward nine and a 79 for the day, which was good enough for 21st place and a spot in the district championship.

Emmaus seniors Ben Nichols and Silas Wellhoener also competed in the event but did not advance.

Nichols got off to a rough start but recovered from a front-nine 48 with a 40 on the back to shoot 88 in the event. His second nine was looking even better before he made a double-bogey on the 18th hole, his only double of the back nine.

Wellhoener made three double-bogeys and two bogeys on the front nine for a 46. He improved with a 43 on the back nine for an 89.
