Late Viking touchdown tops Emmaus

The Emmaus High School football team took its first lead of the game in the fourth quarter, but host Central Catholic answered with a late touchdown to go back on top and held on for a 17-14 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win last Thursday night at J Birney Crum Stadium.

A 17-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter by Anthony Attar, his second rushing score on the night, gave the Hornets their first lead of the game at 14-10.

But the Vikings (4-2 overall, 3-0 EPC) responded with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Janiel Pena to Grayson Schmell, that proved to be the game-winning score.

After a scoreless first quarter, CCHS got on the scoreboard with a 27-yard field goal from Bryson Baker. Central then went ahead 10-0 on a 16-yard TD pass from Pena to Schmell. Following halftime, Attar found pay dirt from eight yards out to put his team on the scoreboard, down 10-7 heading to the final stanza.

Emmaus outgained Central, finishing with 339 yards of total offense and also held a 15-11 advantage in first downs. Quarterback Kellen Hafner went 18-for-25 for 193 yards. Attar ran for 123 yards on 11 carries and the two scores. Mason Lenig led the receiving corps with seven catches for 75 yards. Legend Vasquez had three receptions for 64 yards and AJ Kaintz caught four passes for 46 yards.

Emmaus, which is now 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference, hosts Whitehall this Friday night in an EPC game from East Penn School District Stadium. The Zephyrs are 5-1 and 3-0 in the EPC. They are coming off a 43-8 victory at Dieruff last Friday. They also have victories over Liberty, Pleasant Valley, Northampton and Wilkes-Barre. Their only defeat came at the hands of Nazareth.
