Falcons on cusp of making playoffs
With four games left in the regular season, the Salisbury boys soccer team is on the verge of qualifying for the postseason.
At 6-5-2 overall, the team is flirting with the .500 level needed to make districts.
In league play, its 5-3-2 record has it in a group of six teams fighting for five playoff spots.
“We are looking like we will make the playoffs, but it’s all very close right now,” said coach Jonathan Ruiz of his team’s chances with four games left on the schedule.
This past week wasn’t much help. The Falcons downed Palmerton 2-1 before playing to a 1-1 tie with Pen Argyl and fell to Northwestern Lehigh 5-2 to finish out the week.
Soren Ruiz had two goals, scoring one against Palmerton and then getting the team’s only goal against the Green Knights. Ruiz was assisted by Harrison Stopper in the win against the Blue Bombers and Jeandy Lantiqua Batista had the other goal in the game. Stopper also had an assist on the goal that tied Pen Argyl.
Salisbury’s defense couldn’t stop the scoring power of Northwestern Lehigh as the Tigers poured in five goals, matching the season-high allowed by the Falcons in a game this season. Coming into the game against Northwestern, Salisbury had allowed 24 goals in 12 games this season with Quakertown being the only other team to get five goals against the Falcons. No Colonial League team had more than three goals against them before the loss to the Tigers.
Nick Laziridis and Thomas Pojanowski scored the goals against Northwestern Lehigh with Lloyd Johannessen getting the assist on the Pojanowski goal.
This week, Salisbury has league games against Catasauqua (1-13-1, 0-10-1) and Moravian Academy (8-2-3, 7-1-3) on the schedule. It also has a nonleague game at home against Oley Valley (1-7-0). Waiting in the wings for next week is Southern Lehigh (7-3-4, 7-1-3).
Notre Dame of Green Pond, Northern Lehigh, Wilson, and Salisbury all have five wins in the league. Pen Argyl and Palisades both have four wins and are in contention for playoff spots. The Falcons hold the tiebreaker against Northern Lehigh and have split their two games against Wilson this season and tied Pen Argyl.
Two more wins would put Salisbury into the district playoffs.
