Cold-weather issues were part of Coplay Borough Council’s actions during its Oct. 13 meeting.
Council approved a 2026-27 coal bid for Hobel’s Coal for 100 tons of rice oil-treated coal. The cost will be $275 per ton.
Also approved was a request by Explorer Post 101 to hold its winter holiday open house, set for Dec. 11 through Jan. 3, 2027, at various times to be announced at a later date.
Coplay Sports was approved to use the gym, located inside borough hall, 5-7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; 5-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
In other business, Coplay Fire Department was granted approval to hold a coin toss from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 27 at Second and Chestnut streets.
Borough council approved a resolution authorizing council President Rick Kern and borough secretary Tiffany Benson as authorized signers for a Local Share Account grant.
Coplay Public Library was approved to submit a grant proposal. In addition, Beth Ann Suarez was approved as a member of the library board.
In the hearing of persons present agenda item, a resident suggested council increase salaries of borough police officers. Council President Rick Kern said officers’ salary are negotiated with the police union during contract negotiations. The current police contract expires in 2027.
Another resident brought a number of items before council. He first noted an increased number of large construction trucks parked on public streets. His second concern was the number of cars around the borough that have no inspection sticker.
The resident’s third issue was a littering complaint near the sports field. He noted baseball game attendees leave water bottles and other trash along the borough streets. He also brought up a number of unkempt properties in the borough and suggested an increase in ordinance fines as a way to control the problem.
Lastly, the resident told borough council a person in a silver/gray vehicle was shown on social media allegedly throwing cat food out the vehicle window at intersections in Coplay.
A discussion followed concerning a social media ordinance. Mayor Bill Leiner Jr. said he believed a social media policy is important for the borough. Solicitor James Preston said his office can draft an ordinance.
Council will meet Nov. 3, for a workshop, and Nov. 10, for a regular meeting. Both are held 7 p.m. at borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St.
