Liberty girls top PMW on senior night

Liberty’s girls soccer team celebrated senior night with a 4-0 victory over Pocono Mountain West on Oct. 1 at Liberty.

“We’re all super excited to be celebrating together and having our last hurrah together as seniors,” said Liberty goalie Sara Ribau. “That energy was really empowering. We got the ball moving, and it just felt really good. I think we have a really good group of girls that care a lot about playing the sport and getting the job done.”

The Hurricanes kept Pocono Mountain West goalie Angelyna MacCaskill busy with 18 saves on 22 shots.

“I think we played a little hectic at times, mostly because of the emotion of senior night,” said Liberty coach Andrew Uhler. “We found good ways to still move the ball towards goal and get plenty of shots. We probably forced it a little bit, but ultimately, I’m happy with the result.”

MacCaskill was consistent in making tremendous saves until Nareh Tahmassian found the back of the net in the 25th minute.

“I think it was right time and right positioning, and I had a great assist from Vivian Milia, so it was honestly teamwork and chemistry,” Tahmassian said. “I worked so hard this season to get a goal. As I see the ball rolling, I think to myself, did I put it in the right place? Did it reach? Did it actually go in? But the excitement in seeing the ball in the back of the net is indescribable.”

Emilya Teran was first to score in the second half after possessing the ball at midfield.

“I kept looking up for the right time and shot it from around the 20,” she said. “Their defense was watching our line a lot, so we were called offsides a good amount. When we found those breakthroughs though, good shots made good goals.”

Sofia Quarry scored in the 67th minute, and Emma Frisch’s shot in the 71st minute was too high for MacCaskill to save.

“I think we wore them down as the game went on, and that allowed us more opportunities,” said Coach Uhler. “It’s difficult to defend for 80 minutes that way.”

Liberty’s seniors include Violet Berk, Avery Clagett, Cameron Clagett, Shyanne Hall, Megan Ortega Santiago, Mazzi Paulus, Sienna Pena, Sara Ribau, Nareh Tahmassian, and Emilya Teran.

“Their impact goes so far beyond the field,” said Uhler. “They understand the team, the culture, how to motivate the girls. They have all those intrinsic values that help us consistently be a top group, and when they have their opportunities on the field, they make the most out of it, so I really appreciate that about them.”

Liberty’s record is now 6-5-2.

“It’s a good season,” Uhler said. “This will be our best win total under my leadership, and we’re hoping to do even more.”
