Heckert continues to make an impact

Whitehall’s Justin Heckert admittedly was a late football bloomer. But it didn’t take him long to know it was his sport.

“I started playing football in middle school,” recalled Heckert earlier this season. “Head (football) coach (Steve) Piston came to me during school and really wanted me to try out for football.

“Once I got there I really enjoyed playing and having fun so I stuck with it and I’ve been playing since then.”

This season, the 6-3, 260-pound left and defensive tackle began his senior season as a two-way lineman for the Zephyrs. Coming into this season, Heckert is part of a returning core that helped the Zephyrs to their second District 11 Class 5A title in the past three seasons.

He sees another opportunity in front of him this season, and he is hungry to gain another title.

“We were preparing for this season,” said Heckert. “Since December, we have been in the weight room getting ready.”

Growing up, Heckert knew he would be destined for line play. His size was an easy indication.

“I was always on the line because I was always the biggest kid there,” noted Heckert. “I love playing on the line. It’s fun getting to block and throw people around.”

Heckert didn’t take long to recognize that the line would be his home.

“I really felt comfortable after like the first couple games,” said Heckert. “I like to see how my opponent reacts to how I play so I can get the one up on them to win the battle.”

Heckert is undecided on his college choices, as he is mulling over multiple offers.

“I am still working on that,” said Heckert as of earlier this season. “I have to see where my best fit is.”

Heckert’s biggest influence has been head coach Andy Marino, who has been a steady force.

“He has helped me so much with this football process,” beamed Heckert. “He always takes his time to work with me so I can get better.”

Marino believes Heckert will continue to make an impact this season.

“We look forward to Justin being a two-way player this year,” said Marino earlier this season. “He will provide leadership for the lineman on each side of the ball.”

Heckert has been impressed with his team’s bond.

“The chemistry this summer [was] amazing,” boasted Heckert. “Everybody [gets along, and we are all pushing each other to get better and better every day.”
