NWL girls soccer wins seven straight games
The girls soccer program at Northwestern Lehigh continues to roll.
After a slow start against Nazareth in the season opener, the Lady Tigers have put together seven straight wins. Part of the reason for the success has been the ability of veteran players to get younger players up to speed on how the system works.
Last week, Northwestern picked up wins against Jim Thorpe, Palisades, and Notre Dame of Green Pond to boost its Colonial League record to 5-0.
All three wins were shutouts, giving the Tigers four straight clean sheets.
Junior Juliet Snyder has scored at least one goal or had one assist in every game this season.
Last week she added four goals and two assists to her season total, including a hat trick in a 13-0 win over Jim Thorpe. On the season, Snyder has seven goals and five assists for the Tigers.
Against the Olympians, Sophia Schaffer scored four goals. The senior now has 14 goals and six assists this season, including getting a point in each of the last six games.
Schaffer added a goal and an assist against in a 2-0 win at Palisades and then scored all three of the team’s goals in a 3-0 win against Notre Dame of Green Pond.
In the win over Jim Thorpe, coach Jordan Smith was able to get playing time for a number of young players and it paid off. Freshmen Elliana Fluke, Mia Kern, Addie Metzger, and Sophia Varvarelis all scored goals. For Kern and Metzger, the goals were the first of their varsity career while Fluke and Varvarelis notched the second goal of their varsity career.
Schaffer has been impressed with how the younger players have adapted and have fit into the scheme at the varsity level.
“They’ve done really well,” said Schaffer. “They have worked hard and are really fitting in well. They play hard and have done a good job helping to fill some of the holes we had coming into the season. It didn’t take them long to get used to playing with us.”
The Tigers have road games at Pen Argyl and Southern Lehigh this week.
