George reaches volleyball milestone
The Northwestern Lehigh girls volleyball team has rattled off five straight wins and during the stretch has dropped just one set. The Tigers also got to celebrate a milestone along the way as libero Lexie George delivered the 1,000th dig of her high school career in a win over Salisbury.
The senior, who will be continuing her academic and athletic careers at Franklin and Marshall, has been a standout player for the team as they have become one of the elite programs in the Colonial League and District 11.
“She started as a libero in her sophomore year and since then, she has pretty much controlled the court for us,” said head coach Mike Maston. “She does an amazing job and to get to the 1,000 mark is a great achievement. She’s only the second girl in the history of the program to get there, so that’s a really good job by her.”
The match was stopped so George could be presented with a gold soccer ball with her name and achievement on it. After the match, she was bombarded by friends and family for photos to celebrate the occasion.
“I’m proud of the fact that I had the motivation and determination that I had to reach this point,” said George. “I put a lot of time and effort and work into getting to a thousand. My teammates helped me along the way and their ability to get me the ball has been the key. I think that and my love for the game all comes into play in getting this milestone.”
George started playing volleyball in seventh grade and fell in love with the sport.
“It’s my favorite thing ever,” she said. “I love running the defense and just everything about volleyball. I just couldn’t imagine myself doing anything different and I’m looking forward to finishing out this season and then playing at the college level.”
Northwestern picked up four wins last week with shutouts over Jim Thorpe, Blue Mountain, and Catasauqua. The only set the Tigers dropped came against Notre Dame of Green Pond, who they defeated 3-1. No individual stats were available for the games.
The Lady Tigers are now 7-2 overall and 6-1 overall. The Tigers have games against Lehighton and Palmerton this week and wrap up the week with a rematch against Southern Lehigh.
