At its Sept. 17 meeting, the Lower Macungie Township board of commissioners approved two ordinances updating the township’s land-use and development regulations..

Ordinance 2026-05 amends Chapter 27 of the township code, which governs zoning regulations. The changes include revised and updated definitions, modifications to permitted and accessory uses, and new regulations concerning solar panels, fences, walls and other property improvements. The ordinance also updates standards related to temporary storage units, the height of accessory structures and other zoning requirements. Definitions such as mobile home lot, pathway and sidewalk were revised as part of the update.

Ordinance 2026-06 amends Chapter 22A, the township’s Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance (SALDO). The changes affect plan submission requirements and land-development regulations. Updates include revised terminology, such as replacing “bikeway” with “pathway,” changes to open-space neighborhood development standards, modifications to grass strip and sidewalk width requirements, and revisions to utility easement regulations.

Township Manager Bruce Beitel also shared correspondence from Melissa Hamsher, director of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry’s Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. The township was recognized for its commitment to workplace safety, including efforts by the fire department and its safety committee. As a result, the township received a 5% reduction in its workers’ compensation insurance premiums.
