21-year-old Whitehall man charged in stabbing death of father

A 21-year-old Whitehall Township man has been charged in the Sept. 15 stabbing death of his father in their home in the 700 block of Second Street.

Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan and Whitehall Township Police Chief Michael Marks announced the arrest Sept. 16 of Daniel Latorre Jr., charged with felony counts of criminal homicide and aggravated assault/attempts or causes serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a prohibited weapon (pocket knife).

According to the DA’s office, officers were called to the home for a reported stabbing around 8:30 p.m. Sept. 15. The investigation revealed that Latorre Jr. stabbed his father, 40-year-old Daniel S. Latorre.

First responders at the scene attempted life-saving measures, but Daniel S. Latorre died from his injuries and was pronounced dead 9:37 p.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem, Holihan said.

According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel Buglio, Daniel S. Latorre died from sharp force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.

Holihan said a second victim sustained a laceration to her hand, adding the incident appeared to be a domestic dispute between the three family members who lived at the home.

The investigation revealed a verbal dispute between the female victim and Daniel S. Latorre was recorded on a cellphone. During that verbal argument, Daniel Latorre Jr. was armed with a pocket knife that he used to stab his father, Holihan said.

Latorre Jr. was arraigned and remains in Lehigh County Jail without bail. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for Sept. 21.

In addition to the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensic Center, Whitehall Township Police Department, Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office and the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force are investigating. The Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit is assisting with the investigation.
