The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Lehigh County officially launched Suicide Prevention Month with a community Flag Raising and Proclamation Ceremony at the Lehigh County Government Center. The event brought together county leaders, community advocates, behavioral health professionals, first responders, and residents to raise awareness about suicide prevention, honor those affected by suicide, and encourage community action. The program included remarks from County Executive Josh Siegel’s office, an invocation, a moment of silence, a ceremonial flag raising, remarks from Coroner Daniel Buglio, and recognition of local suicide prevention champions through community advocacy awards.

During the event, speakers emphasized that suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility and highlighted the importance of connection, reducing stigma, and ensuring access to support. Local data shared by the Coalition noted that, as of July 2026, Lehigh County had experienced 29 suicide deaths, underscoring the continued need for awareness, education, and intervention efforts.

Upcoming Suicide Prevention Month Events

QPR Gatekeeper Training

Join the Coalition on World Suicide Prevention Day, Sept. 10, for a free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Gatekeeper Training. Participants will learn to recognize warning signs of suicide, ask supportive questions, and connect individuals to appropriate help and resources. The training will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Pinebrook Family Answers, 402 N. Fulton Street, Allentown. Registration is limited to 30 participants and closes Sept. 4. Mental Health Matters: Supporting First Responders & Veterans

On Sept. 14, the Coalition will host a free community training focused on the mental health challenges affecting first responders and veterans. The session will be presented by Benjamin Iobst, Ph.D. and will cover warning signs, risk factors, practical ways to offer support, and available community resources. The training will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Cetronia Ambulance Corps Building, Allentown. Registration is available through Carlos Gomez at cgomez@pbfalv.org.

Plant Bingo Fundraiser

Support suicide prevention efforts while enjoying a fun community event at the Coalition’s Plant Bingo Fundraiser Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to p.m. at Jordan United Church of Christ in Allentown. The fundraiser will feature 25 bingo games, basket raffles, a 50/50 raffle, and food available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the Coalition’s Celebration of Life Event and suicide prevention activities.
