It couldn’t have been a better start for Freedom’s football season.

The Patriots opened their campaign with a convincing 51-20 victory over Downingtown West last week, showcasing a balanced offense and plenty of big-play ability heading into Friday’s marquee Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matchup with Parkland.

The Pates were led by LaShawn Johnson, who rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Michael Stofanak added 229 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Davyann Moore turned three receptions into 155 yards and two scores.

For coach Jason Roeder, the performance provided an early reward for the work his players put in during the offseason.

“Exciting to get off to that type of start,” Roeder said. “It validates for the kids all the hard work they put in this offseason.

The Patriots’ ability to effectively run and throw the football was particularly encouraging. Freedom also used tempo to keep Downingtown West’s defense on its heels.

“It’s only one game, but we feel we have the pieces on both sides of the ball to be successful,” Roeder said. “Our run/pass balance and our ability to use tempo was nice to see on Friday.”

Freedom now turns its attention to Parkland, which enters Friday’s BASD home opener looking to rebound from a 28-21 loss to Phillipsburg in week one.

The Trojans present a significantly different challenge, and Roeder knows the Patriots will have to be ready in every phase.

“Parkland is always a complete football team that challenges you in all three phases of the game,” said Roeder.

While the 51-point performance was an impressive opening statement, Roeder isn’t allowing his team to become complacent. Freedom will use the week to clean up mistakes and improve in every area.

“All three phases,” Roeder said when asked where he wants to see improvement. “It was a great win, but there is plenty to improve on. It’s just nice making those corrections following a win.”
